FASTING OF THE MONTH OF HOLY RAMADAN

Islam is the only religion that has retained the spiritual and outward dimensions of doing fast throughout centuries. The worst human emotions are pride, gluttony, lust, avarice, envy, and anger. These emotions according to human nature are not easy to control, for this a person must strive hard with complete dedication to discipline them. Muslims fast in order to purify their soul, during fast a person has to control on the most uncontrolled, savage human emotions. The fundamental Pillar of religion Islam, the Fast of the Holy month of Ramadan, occurs once in a year on the 9th lunar month, the month of Ramadan, in which Holy Quran was revealed. ALLAH Almighty in His infinite mercy Has exempted the ill, travellers, and others who are not able to do fasting during the Holy Ramadan.

Fasting helps Muslims in developing self-control, a better understanding of gifts of ALLAH Almighty and greater compassion toward the deprived. Fasting in religion Islam involves abstaining and getting away from all bodily pleasures and prohibited activities between dawn (fajr) to sunset (maghrib). During fast not only food and drinks are forbidden, but also all kind of activities like backbiting, lying, cheating etc.

All those things which are regarded as prohibited become more strictly prohibited in this Holy month, because of the sacredness. Each and every moment while fasting, a person suppresses their desires and passions in loving obedience to ALLAH Almighty. This consciousness of duty, responsibility and the spirit of tolerance and patience help in strengthening Muslim’s faith. Fasting helps Muslims in gaining self-control. A person who abstains from permissible things like drink and food is likely to feel conscious of all his sins. A sense of spirituality helps Muslim to break the habits of lying, gossiping, staring with lust at the opposite sex, and wasting of time etc.

Staying thirsty and hungry for whole day from fajr to maghrib makes one feel the misery of the millions of people who go hungry or those who are spending their lives with hunger or are at danger risk of hunger. After all, why would a person care about extreme starvation if he has never experience its pangs oneself? We can see why Holy Ramadan is also a month of giving charity. At dusk (with the maghrib azaan), the fast is broken by taking light meal. Some take break fast with dinner but some Families and friends take special late evening meal together, often including special foods items served only at this time of the year.

Muslims go to the masjid for performing special Ramadan namaz (taraweeh), followed by special prayers and this is performed only during Holy Ramadan. Near the end of the Holy Ramadan many Muslims do aitkaaf and perform special act of worship in all “Taaq Raat”.
